Bathing Beauty Season is Upon Us, Chic-a-dees

May 24th, 2008

Doesn’t it always seem to sneak up? And like everything in the fun, fashion world, what you wear on the beach is just as important as what you wear on the streets. But what to wear?! Fear not––finding out what’s hot right now and coupling it with what feels right for you is a surefire formula for swimsuit success.

I don’t know who started the rumor that bikinis and tank suits were the only acceptable beach attire, but designers and department stores agree this rationale is outdated. The swimwear runways were dominated by newer, fresher takes on the timeless classic for summer ’08. Case in point: The “Monokini”. As an alternative to the original one piece, the monokini has cut outs at the sides or in the front that make for a pretty, unique silhouette. A great, well-priced choice meeting this criterion is Target’s Mossimo Black: Missoni Monokini.

For those who want a different and one-of-a-kind one-piece option, go retro in a vintage 50’s pin-up girl style suit.

Hip, boho paisleys are also popular again in the fashion mags––big, fun prints that don’t take themselves seriously are back again! Fierce yet free spirited, these suits have a sweet, 60’s style that anyone can pull off. Billabong’s aptly named “Garden of Love” triangle top and tie-Bottom should get you that free love look in no time. To combine the one piece and hippie paisley trends, pick up Old Navy’s women’s cross-back swimsuit in blue paisley and hit the sand!

Cute, girly suits never seem to go away, and who would want them to? One fabulous, feminine trend is ruffles, which when used a lot or a little add an adorable, effortless touch. Besides being pretty, they can also offer a bit more coverage––hey, sometimes more really is more! Be sure to check out Delia’s check ruffle “Skirtini” (new favorite fashion phrase!), and check knot bandeau.

But most importantly, the best advice for looking beautiful and bold on the beach is…be confident! The girl slouching on the sidelines, or forever under the umbrella never gets noticed. So go on, make a splash!!

Pandemonium, frantic calls, insane faxes, Starbucks runs, begging, pleading, unabashed status seeking, personal dignity (not to mention personal space) all but forgotten, and more…Yes, dear readers, New York Fashion Week has begun!!

February 1st, 2008

… And not a moment too soon! With just about zilch red carpet doings going on these days, the next week promises to be a celebrity watcher’s dream. For a change, the question is not “Darling heart, what are your going to wear, because you must, must, MUST look amaaaaazing!” But rather, what are they going to wear?? So let’s begin: Firstly, expect to see the likes of Kate Bosworth (currently starring in Calvin Klein’s spring ad campaign), Jessica Simpson, Beyoncé Knowles, Claire Danes, Joss Stone, Rumer Willis, Courtney Love, Sophia Bush, Anne Hathaway and Emma Roberts to name a few, craning their necks on the catwalks.

And let us not forget the par-tays… NYC is a hard working town, but when it gets right down to it, they party just as hard. First there’s Erin Fetherston’s after party tonight at Rose Bar. We assume such Fetherston followers as Kirsten Dunst, Zooey Deschanel, and Karen Elson will be swinging by for congrats smooches. The parties continue tomorrow, with the Built By Wendy, indie fashion label after party at Werkstätte Gallery. Look for the Beastie Boys and a much touted mystery guest. And Rock & Republic’s after party, also tomorrow night at 1 Oak. The most star-studded event comes on Wednesday, when Madonna co-hosts a gala at the new Gucci store in Trump Tower to benefit UNICEF and her Raising Malawi charity. Miss Madge’s guest list includes Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Sean Combs, Lenny Kravitz, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Lindsay Lohan, Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Alex Rodriguez, Martha Stewart and Uma Thurman… and Lord knows who else! Performances by Alicia Keys and Rhianna are also planned.
With all that and more, keep your eyes peeled to the blogs… though with mercury retrograde, you might be more inclined to keep your eyes trained on People Magazine which should be transiting your e-mailbox like any minute now…
later, peeps!

Happy 2008!

January 2nd, 2008

On New Years Eve, right as the ball drops in Time Square, millions of people begin promising themselves that this is the year they’ll go after their dreams. I know I do it, and you probably do too. It’s a wonderful tradition – one of my favorites actually, because it gets you to really take a look at your life and figure out what you want to change and improve. As the clock strikes midnight, most of us feel that anything is possible - and that’s an amazing feeling!

So why is it exactly that this great rush sometimes seems to end in disappointment? In my opinion, there are a few reasons why, and a few ways to avoid the pitfalls and actually accomplish what you want. A lot of people tend to set the bar too high for themselves, and take on an “all or nothing” approach. If you want to get an A in a class you’re currently failing, you might be setting yourself up to get let down. A better resolution might be to do all of your homework and study for a certain amount of time before each test. You’ll slowly but surely improve your grade instead of making an intimidating, one-time promise. Hey, the tortoise won the race for a reason!

On top of being slightly unrealistic with our resolutions, we sometimes vow to change the things that make us unique. I have a friend who constantly looks amazing. Her outfits are always perfectly matched, and her shoes are always sky high and to die. One year, I promised myself that I would start dressing like her - i.e. in a pair of killer stilettos at all times. After a few weeks, my feet looked fabulous, but they felt terrible. I also didn’t look or feel like me anymore–what made my BFF awesome just made me look uncomfortable and out of place. After a while, I realized that I missed my adorable sparkly ballerina flats – I was more fabulous when I was being myself wearing them. In other words, a new year doesn’t have to mean a new you all together. For instance, if you want to lose some weight, don’t do it because so-and-so looks a certain way, since what works for so-and-so may not work for you. Odds are, you’re better off being the best YOU can be, and you’ll have a better year because of it. Consider this before making any changes.

So chickadees, I hope this is the year you all go after and stick to your hopes and dreams. Lets make this one to remember! Happy New Year!

Heart,
Lisa

Interview Avec Moi!

December 19th, 2007

Of late, i’ve received many emails from peeps asking about the writing process and where i get my inspiration, that I thought — ‘voila! why not post this recent interview!’ by YA book reviewer, Enchanted reviews. So here goes:

Interview with YA Author Lisa Barham

1. How long have you been writing?

1. That’s a great question. Looking back, I think I’ve been writing ever since I could hold a pencil. Of course, I didn’t know I was writing when I was doodling away stream of consciously––plunging the depths of my early pre-adolescent emotions, and drawing and developing characters in my notebooks. (Ahh, If only I had those precious notebooks today!!) Later, as an editor at a fashion forecasting company, I had to write. And subsequently, I worked in the entertainment industry, developing material for motion pictures and television. I’d also written a couple of screenplays, which helped me hone my writing skills. But it wasn’t until A GIRL LIKE MOI, that I actually felt like a writer.

2. Why Young Adult?

2. It’s interesting because YAs are, without question, the most sophisticated, diverse, global and brand–savvy audience in history. I felt Imogene and her circle of friends reflected this. But when the first rumblings of Imogene tumbled out of my imagination, I envisioned her older—in her early 20’s—just out of college and beginning her career. It wasn’t until an early creative meeting with a publisher and my agent, when it was pointed out that the experiences and the emotions I expressed for Imogene were younger. The things Imogene and her friends were struggling with––romantic infatuation, obsession, swirling hormones, confusion about the one’s life path–– were some of the things more befitting high school girls. Also Evie and Imogene have a strong, inescapable bond of best friendship. That kind of bond generally peaks in high school. So all in all, the YA genre just followed suit.

3. What sparked the idea for A Girl Like Moi?

3. The initial spark was irony. There is just something that strikes me funny about real life fifteen year olds who seriously covet and will do anything in their power to purchase a $2,000 Chanel bag…Girls today are faced with so much temptation, and are so plugged in and are such voracious consumers of everything from designer clothing to computers, communication, travel, electronics, music and entertainment. All this while straddling two worlds – the world of high school and childhood, and that of the grown up workaday world yet to come, and the struggle for how to keep true to ones self amid all the pressure and noise out there. Mix into that a yearning for fame, stardom, notoriety or whatever you want to call it. To me, that was all such a good backdrop for conflict and storytelling. It was so easy for me to see characters dropped into that crazy life.

4. I loved the character names in the book. Imogene. Spring Sommer. Winter Tan. How did you come up with them?

4. There are four shipping, or, selling seasons that the fashion industry revolves around: Autumn/Winter, Holiday, Resort, and Spring/Summer. Naming Imogene’s boss, the head of Hautelaw, Spring Sommer, was a natural spoof on that. Regarding Winter Tan, sometimes things just jump out at you. I was on an airplane, reading a brochure from a shoe manufacturer, whose sales contact was in fact someone by the name of Winter Tan. Really! Winter being the opposite of spring… well, I almost died laughing, because it was so perfect. I couldn’t have thought of that myself.

5. What’s your favorite thing about Imogene?

5. My favorite thing about Imogene is her positive attitude. I think one of the things to keep in mind, is that life sometimes hands you lemons, which are usually challenges to be overcome. The trick is realizing that a challenge can be an opportunity to tap into something deeper within ourselves, and ultimately, when brought out, makes us better people. So, like Imogene, we have to all strive to make lemonade

6. Can you describe the book in three words?

6. The quick answer is: ambition, love, being true to yourself, fate. But scattered throughout A GIRL LIKE MOI are Imogene’s affirmations. There is one affirmation at the beginning of the epilogue, which may sum it up best: A Coeur vaillant, rien d’impossible! Which translates: With a brave heart, nothing is impossible. (Oops, that’s seven words!)

7. What was your favorite scene to write?

7. It’s hard to distinguish one scene over another because I loved writing the entire book. But if I had to choose just one, it might be when Imogene meets Paolo for the first time––how insecure she was, her embarrassing tongue-ties, her butterflies, and ultimately how unprepared she was to meet anyone whom she could possibly fall in love with, and would lead to the conflict between her heart and her head.

8. Do you have any writing rituals?

8. No rituals in a bizarre sense. What I do is try to clear the decks of any distractions before I begin writing. I return email, read then newspapers (I am a voracious news junkie!). Sometimes I’ll zip though my iPod to find some great music to get my molecules racing. Once I’m in the ‘zone’ I turn everything off–he phone, email, music, everything. And I’m gone. Sometimes for five hours or more. That’s always my goal when I begin writing. For me, that’s when my writing is the best.

9. What’s next for you?

9. I just finished editing “Accidentally Fabulous,” the third book in the Imogene series, so what I’m hoping for next is a vacation! Ha! But seriously, I’ve got three or four books rumbling around inside my brain, so I’m watching carefully which one of them will win the fight to be next.

Festive Fashions

December 10th, 2007

Who doesn’t love the holidays? There’s so much to enjoy––family, staying warm by the fire… and of course, fashion! However, fashion during the holiday season can be tricky. Sometimes festive can be downright tacky, but if done right, simply fabulous!

If you’d like to get a little more creative than plain ol’ red and green this year, (trust me, you do), why not try out something new? One of my favorite “it” trends is bows, and what better way to anticipate opening gifts? Slip into Urban Outfitter’s gold, bow front “Lame Party Dress” to get into the spirit. The shiny fabric resembles wrapping paper, so natch, you’ll feel like someone’s cute little present. It’s also perfect for the numerous holiday parties you social butterflies will be attending in the upcoming months. And with the “Festival of Lights” upon us, why not start dressing up for it now? The aptly named CoolJewishTshirts.com has some cute tops that will look fun and festive over jeans and a thin, knit scarf. Emblazed with the Yiddish phrases we all know and love, (Farklempt, anyone?), it’s a great way to flaunt Hebrew heritage this season. Another cute option you can get anywhere? Evil eye jewelry! While my grandmother swears by them, you don’t have to believe they’re anything more than an awesome little accessory. Mazel-tov to that!

Ok, obviously Christmas and Chanukah aren’t the only celebrations this month, and they’re certainly not the only ones you can dress up for. ‘Tis the season to celebrate anything you darn well please–but make sure you look good doing it! If you look and feel great this season, surrounded by everyone you love, it’s sure to be a success.

Happy Holidays!

xoxo, Lisa

Do You Speak Fashionese?

November 26th, 2007

Okay, listen up, chic-lettes, fashion school is now in session! Yes, we know that New York Fashion Week is all but a distant memory, but my brain is still reeling with a gazillion new and exciting buzzwords to encapsulate next season’s hottest trends. While hot for fall, this first trend promises to be even hotter for spring. Gals, the only word you need to know is: hats (hat-tz) n. Webster’s dictionary might define this simply as a covering for one’s head. I, on the other hand, want to get a smidge more specific. Namely: Albertus Swanepoel. (Don’t ask me how to pronounce it, I can barely spell it!) Check out his millinery prowess on the runways of Proenza Schouler, who featured his very fine (and very French!) bejeweled cloches. Marc by Marc Jacobs, and the lovely ruffle-y brimmed hats at Thakoon were also singing his praises all the way to the bank. (Fashion warning: for spring, hats are refined and lady-like. Mad-hatters need not apply.)

Hats are without a doubt, one of the best accessories to showcase your individuality and wit. And you can definitely grab a hat for every mood your in. (And as we girls know, there can be a plethora of them, depending on what time of the month we’re talking about!!) A raspberry beret with a black mini dress and boots for a night on the town, or a big brimmed, luxurious number to keep the sun off your face on lazy days in style are just a few suggestions.

Heads up: For a round face, you might consider wearing a square-ish hat; if you’ve got a long face, wear a hat with a wide brim. As for hat hair? Well, the rule of thumb in days past was - small hair, big hat, big hair, small hat… but for spring ‘08, throw your hats in the air, since those rules are so last season.

Ciao for now!

Mood: Thrifty

November 17th, 2007

It’s a well known fact that accessories can make–or break an outfit, lest we forget about the details this fall, girls…they’re just as important now as ever! And, if it’s alright with you, I’d like to share a little style secret of my own… since we’re on the subject and all…

Gone are the days when you had to spend an arm, a leg and a few toes on a pair of cute shoes (shoes being a gal’s best friend, of course). Payless Shoe Source (yes, that Payless) has recently asked a series of top designers to make a line specifically for them. The result? Adorable and affordable!
Patricia Field of “Sex and The City” fame (all the outfits Carrie ever wore? Yeah, that was all her!) is one of the fashionista few behind these absolute must haves. Her silver and gold ankle-strap platforms are so hot, she even wore a pair to the Oscars (The Oscars!) The metallic snakeskin will make you feel oh so New York. (And stop back in November to view her new line of clutches.)
Lela Rose, whose threads have been seen on the likes of Mary-Kate and Ash, has also designed a line of uber-chic flats, pumps, etc. for the brand. My favorite, and a favorite among the best-dressed celebs, are her chocolate brown Turnmill booties. With five gold buttons that run up the side, they look great with a skirt and tights, or peeking out under pants. Fabulous!
Okay, so Hannah Montana (otherwise known as Miley Cyrus) isn’t exactly a top designer, but for us Disney Channel junkies, it’s just as well. The High School Musical star, a devout shoe lover herself, is also aiding in bringing fashion to the masses. Bows are big right now, and her peep toe wedge highlights this trend perfectly. Made from the softest fall-friendly faux suede, this sweet bow sling back is wonderfully wearable all year round!

Well, if you don’t believe me about these chic and cheap styles, visit www.payless.com to see for yourself. And I highly suggest you get your cute little selves over to snatch some up before they’re all gone for good!

Girl-a-Par-tay!

November 8th, 2007

Bonjour glamourinas!
As a bonafide ode to your inner me, myself & I, why not throw yourself a birthday party––even if it’s not your birthday!  (Just a minor detail, naturally.)  It will only add to your personal mystère and let’s be honest, girlfriend…you deserve it!
How does one go about throwing oneself a (not quite) birthday bash? First, invite your best girlfriends.  Tell them how much you appreciate them, and treat them to desserts only (the sweeter and girlier, the better!)   And…just because you’re special, I’ll let you in on a little secret for the sweet, girliest recipe in the world: PETIT FOURS!  A/k/a teeny, tiny, little mini cakes (more on teeny, tiny food later.)
If you’re watching your weight, not to worry––you can still serve yummy food! The trick here is to use mini sized proportions. A great idea? Use baby food jars as your guide. Actually, recycled baby food jars make great serving pieces. (Just don’t cook in them!) For instance, you can serve teeny tiny macaroni & cheese baked the regular way, just served in the bébé jars. Some scrumptious finger food in baby-sized proportions on the side doesn’t sound bad either. Mini hamburgers, some delish finger sandwiches, and some small desserts in addition to the darling petit fours is a good starter menu.  (See recipe below.)
You can go all the way and have a “Baby Phat” party!  Baby doll girl theme everything.  You’ll have an oh so fabulous time and your friends will love you for it!

PETIT FOURS
4-1/2 C Sugar
1 C. Flour
1 C. Almond powder
2-1/4 C. Egg whites
1/2 C. Honey
3-1/2 Tablespoons Kirsch
2 C. very lightly browned butter
Powdered sugar for dusting

1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a large mixing bowl, mix the sugar, flour, almond powder and egg whites until smooth.  Add the honey and kirsch.  Stir in the lightly browned butter and pour the batter into 1 x 1-1/2 x 3/4 inch petit fours molds or muffin tins with a 2 inch diameter.  Dust w/powdered sugar.  Bake for 8 minutes or until the center springs back when lightly poked.
3. Allow the petit fours to cool on a rack.  Then turn them out of their molds.  Dust with more powdered sugar before serving.
